67 kitchens projects of Celtic FC Foundation in Malawi is running

Celtic FC Foundation is tackling poverty, malnutrition and the lack of education in Malawi with its 67 Kitchens project. In partnership with Mary’s Meals, 47 of the 67 school kitchens were already built and are now in operation.

Last year the Celtic FC Foundation announced how funding from the #LionsLegacy campaign would see Celtic fans support the building and running of feeding facilities for children across the developing world, where extreme poverty is claiming lives every day. Cooperation partner Mary’s Meals is a charity with a simple idea that works. By providing one good meal in a place of learning, children are drawn into the classroom where they can receive an education that could one day free them from poverty. As a result of this vital work, 32,000 impoverished children across Malawi are being attracted to the classroom by the promise of a nutritious mugful of vitamin-enriched ‘likuni phala’ maize porridge. Celtic supporters’ clubs and individual donors could sponsor one of the 67 Kitchens, with the facility at each school then proudly displaying the naming banner of its founding CSC or donor.

Huge support from Celtic supporters

After an overwhelming response, the Celtic FC Foundation is proud to share images of some of the initial kitchens, displaying the naming banner of their sponsor, alongside a tribute to the Lions’ Legacy. These signs will serve as a daily reminder to the children at each school that the Celtic support is behind them in building a prosperous future for their community. The project has received support from Celtic supporters across the United States, Australia, Asia and Europe.

Celtic FC Foundation Chief Executive, Tony Hamilton, said: “The Celtic support have done us proud once more. The Lions’ Legacy campaign allowed us to undertake this partnership with Mary’s Meals, and the response we had to that as well as the response to the feeding programme has been truly inspirational. Some of our colleagues and a small army of volunteers are travelling back to Malawi next month to work in those communities, and we are very grateful to everyone at Mary’s Meals for arranging this and for providing such an opportunity for the Celtic support.”

Daniel Adams, Executive Director of Mary’s Meals, said: “The incredible generosity of Celtic FC Foundation and Celtic supporters across the globe is making a huge difference in some of the world’s poorest communities, where daily meals served in school are a lifeline for children who might otherwise be forced to work, beg or forage to survive. We are so thankful for this wonderful and life-changing partnership between Celtic FC Foundation and Mary’s Meals.”

20 more facilities in other regions

With construction in Malawi completed, the building of the final 20 facilities will now follow in other regions of need. Alongside the CSC name painted on the kitchen wall, each supporters’ club fundraising will receive regular updates on the success of the facilities and impact on the children in each community. By supporting projects like the one in Malawi, Celtic FC Foundation continues to uphold and promote the charitable principles and heritage of Celtic Football Club.
