A New Home for Neighborhood and Walking Football in Ghent

A brand new artificial grass neighborhood football pitch was opened today at the Watersportbaan. With activities around neighborhood football (WSB Street) and walking football (De Voskes), the KAA Gent Foundation will from now on use the field several times a week. A meeting place where everyone is welcome to play football, that is, in short, what it’s all about on the synthetic turf field at the Yachtdreef.

Room for neighborhood football
The long queues at football clubs, in combination with the fact that Ghent has the fewest number of football pitches per 10,000 inhabitants in Flanders, means that neighborhood football is gaining popularity. In the fall of 2020, talks were started between the KAA Gent Foundation and the City of Ghent about the need for a better and larger neighborhood football field along the Watersportbaan. Today the ball started rolling for the first time on the artificial grass field at the Yachtdreef. With this field, the City of Ghent offers more opportunities and playing opportunities for everyone in the area.

After the official inauguration of the football field, the Ghent aldermen Sofie Bracke and Hafsa El-Bazioui put on their football boots themselves. They ventured into a game of walking football together with De Voskes and WSB Street, the two football activities of the KAA Gent Foundation in the area.

WSB Street and De Voskes
Neighborhood football association WSB Street and walking football association the Voskes will kick a ball there at fixed training times. WSB Street on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and the Voskes on Friday afternoons. At all other times, the football field will be accessible to everyone in the area.
