Aston Villa Foundation teams up with Aston University to unveil Villa Vision

In honour of the National Eye Healthcare week, both Aston Villa and the Optometry School at Aston University have teamed up to unveil Villa Vision, a new initiative funded by the Premier League and the Professional Footballers’ Association, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of eye health to children in schools and individuals in local community.

The initiative will have a mobile eye care unit which will help to deliver the message of eye health and also be able to offer vision screening on site. Guy Rippon, Head of the Aston Villa Foundation, said: “There are a number of inequalities between the least and most affluent areas of the country when it comes to children and adults accessing eye tests, so we will be focusing our efforts on the areas around Villa Park in local schools and community settings.

“Poor eyesight can impact on self-confidence, behaviour in the classroom and engagement in learning. This will help us to educate local children and residents about the importance of eye care, as well as undertaking screenings, eye tests and access to free glasses for people who may otherwise not have them.”

Professor Leon Davies of Aston University, added: “We are excited to be working with Aston Villa on this fantastic initiative to raise the profile of eye health and the importance of eye examinations with children and adults in the local community. We are proud to support the wider Birmingham community and this project will be a key feature of our civic engagement programme.”
