Athletic Club Foundation organised Copa Ahalegina Cup for people with mental disability

Last Saturday, 16 June, Athletic Club’s facilities at Lezama, Spain held the sixth edition of the Copa Ahalegina Cup, a special football competition for the mentally disabled.

Copa Ahalegina Cup is an annual football tournament in which teams from local organisations in favour of people with mental disability will compete against each other. This year’s tournament is the sixth edition of Copa Ahelegina. Participants this year included organisations from the province of Bizkaia (Adizmi, Gorabide, the Fundación Síndrome de Down Foundation, Gaude and Geu Be), Gipuzkoa (Atzegi and Antigua Luberri) and Álava/Araba (Apdema).

The tournament took place between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Teams played against each other in a special inclusive-mixed 8-person format of the game, in which all players can participate regardless of their mental disabilities.

The Copa Ahalegina Cup is organised by the Athletic Club Foundation in collaboration with the organisations participating in the tournament. The main objective of this initiative is to promote the inclusion of the people with mental disability, as well as to guarantee their access to sports and active leisure. In this way, the Foundation can encourage the values of sports in a relaxed atmosphere that goes beyond the competition’s results.
