Burnley helping young carers learning to cook

With the help of Burnley Community Kitchen, young carers in Burnley were able to develop their cooking skills that will help them prepare healthy meals.

The facility was opened by Burnley FC in the Community last year and as well as having a food bank, community cafe, library and children’s play area, the space also houses a teaching kitchen which delivers a number of cooking programmes to educate the local community.

A group of participants on Burnley’s Young Carers Cooking Group were able to tell Sean Dyche (Burnley FC manager) how the kitchen has inspired them when they had a special lunch with the first-team manager at the club’s training ground for BBC’s Match Of The Day.

“I like learning new experiences and learning new skills with cooking because I wasn’t a good cook,” says participant Poppy. “Now, I’m pretty good.”

As well as giving the young carers respite from their everyday tasks, the course aims to give them the skills to provide nutritious meals to those being cared for as well as for their families in the future.

“My dad is needing 24-hour care now,” says participant Jordan. “I joined young carers when I started high school. We have our own little group chat on social media so then if we do need advice we have each other.”
