Children’s author Helena Pielichaty encourages children to get creative with a football story

The Premier League is continuing to support families and teachers in lockdown by providing free, weekly home-learning activities.

Suitable for five to 11-year-olds, the new Premier League Primary Stars Weekly Challenges have a theme of health and wellbeing, and are supported by curriculum-linked resources.

Character Building

Characters are an important basis for any story, as the plot is usually determined by the decisions they make.

Creating a character and planning what they look like is easy, but deciding on their personality traits and how they might react to situations is more difficult.

For this week’s Premier League Primary Stars Challenge, we are asking families to create a character for a football story and to describe what that character is like on both the outside and the inside.

The challenge has been created in partnership with the National Literacy Trust and has been set by Girls FC series author Helena Pielichaty.

“Are the characters happy? Are they confident? Shy? Moody maybe? Writers – it’s up to you,” Pielichaty says.

To create your character, visit the Premier League Primary Stars Weekly Challenges site and download the worksheet that you can fill in together, or grab a pen and paper and get started.

Those taking part in this PL Primary Stars Challenge can also access a free ebook version of Do Goalkeepers Wear Tiaras?, the first book from the Girls FC series, on the National Literacy Trust’s Words for Life page.
