Club Brugge Joins EFDN

The European Football for Development Network is pleased to announce that the network is joined by a new club, Club Brugge.

Club Brugge Koninklijke Voetbalvereniging, commonly referred to as just Club Brugge, is a football club based in Bruges in Belgium. It was founded in 1891 and its home ground is the Jan Breydel Stadium, which has a capacity of 29,472. One of the most decorated clubs in Belgian football, it has been Belgian league champion on 14 occasions, second only to major rivals Anderlecht, and it shares the Jan Breydel Stadium with city rival Cercle Brugge, with whom they contest the Bruges derby.

Throughout its long history, the Belgian club has enjoyed much European football success, reaching two European finals and two European semi-finals. Club Brugge is the only Belgian club to have played the final of the European Cup (forerunner of the current UEFA Champions League) so far, losing to Liverpool in the final of the 1978 season. They also lost in the 1976 UEFA Cup Final to the same opponents. Club Brugge holds the European record number of consecutive participations in the UEFA Europa League (20), the record number of Belgian cups (11) and the record number of Belgian Supercups (14).

What about Club Brugge’s CSR strategy?

As a top team, Club Brugge not only has a sportive role to play, but also a very important social role.

Fully aware of its huge impact on society, the club wishes to offer a positive contribution to the community on a social level. Because the Club, that is the largest and warmest football family of the country, all carrying a blue and black heart.

By establishing the Club Brugge Foundation, it is taking up its social responsibility, be it local, national, or even abroad. Each year we take up this responsibility by using the force that is Club Brugge to realise projects in the fields of sports, social integration, health and education. And all of this both nationally and internationally, for everyone, with a particular focus on disadvantaged groups.With its Foundation, Club Brugge wants to be a ground-breaking club in Belgium when it comes to social community projects, aiming at establishing Club Brugge as an important social partner in Belgian society.

The Foundation aims at:
– Maximum accessibility of Club Brugge;
– Turning Club Brugge’s huge social exemplary role into concrete actions;
– A positive social contribution by using the impact of football on society.
