Everton in the Community To Host ‘Healthy Hearts’ Event at Goodison Park

Sunday 23 July will see Goodison Park play host to a free heart screening event, delivered by Cardiac Risk in the Young and Everton in the Community in collaboration with The James Nicolas Foundation.

Taking place in the 1878 Lounge from 9am until 4pm, the free-to-attend event is the second ‘Healthy Hearts’ session made possible thanks to funding from leading health cash plan provider Medicash.

Launched in September 2016, Healthy Hearts is a three-year programme aimed at reducing the number of young people dying from sudden cardiac arrest on Merseyside.

Every week in the UK, at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. A simple, non-invasive 10-minute test can identify a young person who might be a risk. The Healthy Hearts programme aims to screen up to 300 young people and expects to identify up to 20 young people with an undiagnosed heart condition.

EitC Director of Health and Sport, Michael Salla said: “Ultimately this important funding from Medicash will help to save lives. We held a screening event last year and identified one young female with a life-threatening heart defect and 15 additional cardiac concerns were detected. This upcoming event could potentially identify more young people with heart defects who can then receive the relevant treatment and support.

Sue Weir, Chief Executive of Medicash said: “We are really pleased to be joining forces with Cardiac Risk in the Young and Everton in the Community to promote this important initiative. We hope as many young people as possible will come along to Healthy Hearts at Goodson Park on 23rd July. It’s a free, quick and painless screening process and we know it will save lives.
