Excelsior supports 32 schools in Rotterdam

S.B.V. Excelsior Rotterdam cooperates this year for the first time with 32 schools. The ‘Excelsior Schools’ programme started at the beginning of the school year in four districts of Rotterdam.

The aim of the Excelsior Schools programme is to contribute to a variety of social themes by organising various (sport) activities in schools. The programme focusses on education, health, and sports participation. The programme offers a wide range of activities and workshops.

Activities and workshops

The activities are of great importance to improve social development and have very different goals. In the Healthy Food workshop, for example, the club is making children aware of the positive effects of healthy eating. The club also delivers a workshop on discrimination, Excelsior tries to help children to understand the negative consequences of discrimination.

The activities are not only developed to provide the children with useful information, but there is certainly also a fun side to the activities. Every school that participates gets 50 free tickets to attend an Excelsior Rotterdam home match in the Excelsior4All stand.

“A personal favourite of mine is the reading workshops. If you see the smile of a child, it immediately makes up for it all your day” says Project Coordinator Demi van der Heiden.

The activities are different for primary and secondary schools. For example, the activities for primary schools consist out of a reading morning, a press conference for kids, an Excelsior coach at the school, Scoring for Health sessions, a discrimination workshop, healthy eating workshop, a visit to a home match of Excelsior and the Excelsior schoolbook.

For secondary schools, the activities include a press conference, an Excelsior coach at the school, a discrimination workshop, the Excelsior experience, a healthy eating workshop and a visit to a home match of Excelsior.

Intensive cooperation

The participating schools were selected after an intensive collaboration with the Municipality of Rotterdam. Director Niels Redert is pleased with the cooperation with the schools and the development of the programme. The municipality was immediately enthusiastic about the project and was looking for an opportunity to provide additional support to schools in their daily activities. This wish fitted perfectly with the goals of S.V.B. Excelsior and this resulted in the current collaboration.
