FC Groningen’s Go-Getters: Turning Setbacks Into Positivity

FC Groningen participates in the More and Better Exercise programme. Through this exercise programme, the Dutch club nicknamed Pride of the North, together with various other top sports organisations and partners, wants to encourage the northern Netherlands to literally get moving.

The ‘Aanpakkers’ is one of the projects in which the inspirational value of top-class sport is used for a broad audience. Six talents, including midfielder DaniĆ«l van Kaam, will be followed for a year.

The participating top sports organisations FC Groningen, Donar, Lycurgus and Topsport Noord, in collaboration with partners from the Municipality and Province of Groningen, University of Groningen, Hanzehogeschool Groningen, Topsport Talentschool, Bea Foundation and More and Better Exercise, launched the ‘Aanpakkers’ initiative in mid-January. Top-class sport inspires and FC Groningen is keen to play its part in society. It is not for nothing that the Pride of the North has expressed its social ambition to solve the lack of physical activity in its catchment area.

Besides Van Kaam, rower Louise Liemberg, basketball player Kjeld Zuidema, athlete Britt Weerman, volleyball player Markus Held and female handbiker Melanie Helweg play the leading roles in the documentary series. Six mini-documentaries and a lot of other content will be produced per athlete. The previous episodes can be viewed here.

Britt Weerman
Britt Weerman has all the qualities to make it to the top of her sport. The high jumper is talented, motivated and wants to get the best out of herself. At a young age she also learned how to turn setbacks into something positive. A quality that Britt still uses today, as her body and injuries occasionally throw a spanner in the works. In the latest episode of the Aanpakkers, the athlete is rewarded for her achievements and talks about difficult moments, ‘normal’ life and the future. The viewer also meets her coach, who tells us what Britt is made of.
