How Chelsea Foundation supported their walking footballers during COVID-19

COVID-19 has brought about the suspension of many CSR programmes, including Walking Football sessions. However, Chelsea Foundation decided to keep supporting its players.

With the Government implementing circulation restrictions, Chelsea Foundation had to suspend their Walking Football sessions. Despite the many difficulties, the Foundation swiftly adapted the sessions to their online version, delivering a crucial programme during such a delicate time.

The weekly online gatherings proved to be fundamental for the players, helping them to be active but also improving their morale. More than 50 calls have been made, some of which even included appearances from past and present Chelsea stars such as Pat Nevin.

“The feedback from the walking footballers has been incredible. Some have felt so isolated and it’s been the only time they have spoken to someone. It’s the highlight of my week and the goodwill generated towards Chelsea has been immense, irrespective of which club the folks support. That can be unusual for males but the trust and friendships built up through these Chelsea zooms has enabled these guys to pull together and through this difficult time”, said Walking Football Coordinator Mark Blythe.
