MORTON BOYS- Meet Ciaran

Ciaran Donnelly plays for our 2008 and 2007 Morton Community Teams and like his team mates, is football crazy.
In July, Ciaran was involved in an unfortunate cycling accident that resulted in him suffering a head and eye injury with a permanent loss of vision to his left eye.

Ciaran demonstrated incredible bravery throughout his operation and treatment however was devastated at the prospect of no longer being able to play football.  Ciaran’s mother contacted Morton Community coach and volunteer Graham Walker to advise him of his anxieties.
Later that week Graham and Morton Boys project worker Blair Kelly paid Ciaran a visit and invited him to see the Greenock Morton first team train.

Ciaran was delighted at the prospect of meeting the first team and went along to Parklea on 15 August to meet Jim Duffy and watch the team train. To top off the experience GMFC’s players signed Ciaran’s strip.

Ciaran’s mum Leona commented: ‘It was a great day for Ciaran and a fantastic gesture from Morton.  Kevin, his dad, thoroughly enjoyed the experience as well!

‘Graham has also provided a lot of reassurance to our family regarding Ciaran’s future playing football.  He has sought advice from football manager, Kenny Shiels, father of footballer Dean Shiels who has a prosthetic eye.  Graham has offered to coach Ciaran and provide him with additional support when he is physically able to begin training again.  We are forever grateful to Morton for their support during this difficult time.’

Ciaran said: ‘I enjoyed meeting the first team, Jim Duffy and assistant manager Craig McPherson. Many thanks for the great time. I really enjoyed it.’
