NEC launches “Score a book!” project

Through this project, NEC and the Gelderland Zuid Library want to let children experience how much fun reading is.

The aim of the project is to have 426 students from eleven schools in the Rijk van Nijmegen read as many books as possible. With each read book or reading assignment, they score a ‘goal’ and are allowed to stick a sticker on a poster. The team has already visited all eleven primary schools participating in the project as part of the National Reading Days.

Studies show that from age 5 onwards the number of children who enjoy reading decreases, especially among boys. Having a football player giving a good example and adding a game element to it, NEC and the Gelderland Zuid Library hope to increase reading pleasure among elementary school pupils.

The official kick-off of “Score a book!” took place at the primary school De Wingerd in Nijmegen, where NEC’s left-back Bas Kuipers read from the book ‘Koen Kampioen’ for almost 100 children.
