Players discuss racism through workshops with Newcastle United Foundation and SRtRC
Young people are challenging stereotypes, racism and discrimination following an educational event led by Newcastle United Foundation and Show Racism the Red Card.
Pupils from schools across Newcastle gathered together at St. James’ Park with Foundation staff and former Newcastle United players, Steve Howey, John Beresford MBE and John Anderson. Newcastle United Women’s Charlotte Potts also joined the event alongside the Lord Mayor of Newcastle Councillor Karen Robinson.
Students in Year 6 (aged 10 – 11) engaged in workshops on hate crimes, racism, language, stereotypes and how to create positive change and conversations with friends, family and the wider community. The event aligns Newcastle United Foundation’s and Show Racism the Red Card’s ambitions to reduce social isolation, equipping communities with new skills and confidence through education and the power of football.

Show Racism the Red Card is an anti-racism educational charity aiming to combat racism through enabling role models, including footballers, to present an anti-racist message particularly to younger generations.
“Show Racism the Red Card was established by Shaka Hislop during his time as a Newcastle United goalkeeper in January 1996. For us, this event is a great way to end the 2022/23 season, coming back home to the football club where the campaign began. Two of the players who were instrumental in getting us started – Steve Howey and John Beresford MBE – attending this event have been outstanding supporters for 27 years. We have now passed the milestone of engaging one million people in our educational programme, but we still have a long way to go in the fight against racism.”

SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD (SRTRC)
Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) is an anti-racism and anti-discrimination programme which is based on the proven concept of the Red Card Campaign delivered in several European countries. SRtRC utilises the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society. The project aims to raise awareness of diversity, foster social cohesion, and reduce physical and verbal violence linked to racism.
