Rangers Legend helps launch Walking Football

Rangers Legend Derek Johnstone joined Rangers Charity Foundation to celebrate the launch of free Walking Football, in partnership with Club 1872.

The 1972 European Cup Winners’ Cup star spent time cheering on the participants, taking photos and socialising over a hot drink.

The Foundation and Club 1872, an official Rangers Supporters Club, teamed up earlier this year to offer people over the age of 50 the chance to take part in a free weekly Walking Football session at Ibrox every Thursday night.

Derek Jonstone said: “It’s been great meeting the Walking Football players this evening and I was really impressed with their skills on the pitch! Football is a love which lasts forever, so making it accessible for everyone to play is a very important and special thing. I could tell from speaking with the team how much of a difference it’s made to their health and social life – the Foundation and Club 1872 should be proud!”

Laura Fawkes, from Club 1872, says: “Club 1872 delivers projects that are to the benefit of the Rangers community. We saw this project as an opportunity to offer them something which will benefit their health, fitness and social lives. I think our two organisations are very much aligned in our focus on community initiatives, so this is a great opportunity to come together as a means for helping others.”

The sessions feature an hour-long Walking Football match at the Ibrox Community complex, followed by the chance to socialise over a cup of tea or coffee in the Ibrox Community Hub, inside Ibrox Stadium. There’s also information on healthy living provided from Rangers community coaches.
