School Celebrates MFC Lionesses And Equality In A Fun And Engaging Way

History was made, the Riverside one school used the forthcoming international games to encourage learning in a fun and engaging way.

The inaugural Arnold Clark Cup games take place at the Riverside today, with Germany taking on Spain ahead of the England Lionesses game against Olympic Champions Canada this evening.

Y5 and Y6 students from St. Bernadette’s took part in a Celebrating the Lionesses P.E Session organised by MFC Foundation as part of a delivery programme with the school.

“The students were very excited to be learning about the Lionesses and knew a lot of facts about the players from the Lionesses work packs we handed the week before,” The afternoon consisted of Active English and Small Sided Games where we saw some fantastic celebrations! I wonder who they were copying?”

Ashley Carter, Education and Equality Lead

“Thanks very much for the session you did with the year fives and sixes. The children were really engaged and it was lovely to do something focused on women’s football, rather than men’s. (…) The activities were well thought out and inclusive, plus they challenged the children with their thinking. I also thought the choices for Player of the Day were particularly well considered as both children are naturally shy and non-competitive, so it was great to see them get the praise!”

The tournament

The Arnold Clark Cup is a new invitational tournament for top women’s national teams around the world: Germany, Spain and Canada travel to join England for the first edition.

It follows the mold of other invitational tournaments that are typically scheduled at this point in the calendar year, like the SheBelieves Cup, held in the United States.

The competition consists of a round-robin tournament, with each team playing each other once. Teams collect three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. The team that tops the standings with the most points wins the cup. In case teams are event on points, goal difference, goals scored and head-to-head results are the first three tiebreakers.

The tournament will be held at three host venues: Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium, Norwich’s Carrow Road, and Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton, home of Wolves. (https://www.sportingnews.com/)
