Walking Football: Reviving the Game for League of Ireland’s Senior Players
Last Saturday marked the debut of the League of Ireland Walking Football Festival, where players aged 65+ proudly wore their club colors in an event focused on physical and mental well-being, as well as social interaction.
Walking Football has quickly gained popularity in Ireland, offering older adults an opportunity to stay active and combat social isolation. With support from Healthy Ireland, Age & Opportunity, and local authorities, the festival saw nine LOI clubs, including Cork City FC, Shelbourne FC, and Bohemians, participate in 36 lively matches. Former players and newcomers alike took to the pitch, fostering new friendships and reigniting old rivalries.
While Shelbourne FC emerged as the winners, the true success was in the sense of community and camaraderie shared by all. “This festival highlighted how football, no matter the age, remains a powerful tool for maintaining health and building social connections.”

One of the day’s standout players, 80-year-old Aidan O’Toole of Bray Wanderers, reflected on his journey: “Playing at 80 is a gift. Walking Football has given me a new circle of friends and reignited my love for the game. I’m grateful for everyone who made this event possible.”
