Welcome Through Football started at AEK FC

Our Member AEK Athens FC kicked-off of their “Welcome Through Football” programme last week.

The Pan-European programme is an EFDN initiative co-funded by the European Union and includes AEK FC and other top European clubs such as Newcastle, Everton, Werder Bremen, Sheffield United, Genk, Benfica and Hearts.

The event took place at the World Cultural Foundation of Diaspora Hellenism in Nea Philadelphia, in the presence of the Mayor of Nea Philadelphia – N. Chalkidona, Yannis Vouros and the Vice President of the Foundation Christos Kapelousos, and a representative of fellow EFDN member Werder Bremen.

Henrik Oesau (Werder Bremen) and Christina Koromila (AEK FC).

The children received the sports material of the team, participated in a two-hour educational programme that included various games and then trained at the Attalos stadium, in N. Philadelphia, under coaches of the AEK Academy and its network.

Attalos President Yannis Tzelis and the children of the Attalos Academy welcomed the children of the programme by handing over flowers as a welcome gift.

“Welcome Through Football” is funded by the European Union and is a football-based educational programme for refugees aged 7-25 years old. It runs for twelve weeks a year for three years and is a creation of EFDN. EFDN and the participating teams aim to test and develop a European methodology that uses football as a ‘tool’ to reach out to refugees and migrants with the aim of activating them physically and socially.
