World Environment Day – Football clubs combat plastic pollution

Today, on the 5th of June the world celebrates World Environment Day. World Environment Day is an international awareness campaign by the United Nations. It’s been celebrated since 1974 with various projects across the world to address environmental problems. This year the theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution”. Professional football clubs are combating the plastic pollution in different ways. Also EFDN member clubs make efforts to address the issue:

CLEAN BEACHES AND BAN OF PLASTIC CUPS

The U20 and U17 of PAOK learned an important life lesson: that it’s our responsibility to keep the environment clean. The young footballers participated in the beach clean-up in Alykes, at Epanomi Thessaloniki, participating in the initiative led by PAOK Action and the environmental organization iSea.The athletes were informed by members of iSea about various issues regarding environmental protection and then got to work. After the collection of plastic and other rubbish, they enjoyed the outcome of their labour, by relaxing in the revamped scenery.

VfL Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen also have taken important steps in recycling materials and especially minimising the use of plastics in their stadiums. Wolfsburg has banned plastic bags already in 2015 and replaced them with paper bags made from 100% recycled paper. Both clubs also use re-usable cups during Match days.
