Burnley FC – Parents on the Ball

Parents on the Ball, delivered in partnership with Burnley Action for Children, is a parenting project that provides support, guidance and health and fitness advice.

Hosted by Burnley FC in the Community (BFCitC), the six-week programme is composed of family-friendly workshops held in a state of the art classroom overlooking the Turf Moor pitch. We use this setting to inspire and motivate all the participants who are covering topics on confidence and healthy eating, while developing skills that can be utilised in a home setting.

The parents taking part in the sessions are offered support with managing difficult behaviour, practical skills such as health and hygiene, storytelling and life skills such as budgeting and routes into employment. Outside of classes they are given one-to-one (1:1) backing at home and are encouraged to take part in further activities at their local Action for Children centre.

The sessions run in 6-week blocks on Tuesdays throughout the year, with Action for Children running the morning activities and BFCitC running the afternoon activities.

Afternoon activities consist of:

  • Motivation and confidence workshops
  • Stadium tours and pitch walks
  • Team building and problem-solving activities
  • Circuit training
  • 1:1 (one-to-one) fitness sessions
  • Zumba
  • Healthy eating and cooking on a budget
  • Lifestyle talks

The club-run sessions introduce parents to new activities that help them gain confidence and skills through physical activity. By using this approach, we have a direct and positive impact on the present circumstances of these families and their futures.
