Football Fans In Training

The Football Fans in Training (FFIT) project marks a unique collaboration between academies, the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) Trust and Scotland’s top football clubs FFIT, as of March 2015 had already attracted more than 2000 men to make significant changes to their risk of ill health by losing weight, becoming more active and eating a healthier diet. This number will have significantly increased due to additional clubs in Scotland delivering the programme to their communities and the model being grasped by top English and European clubs.

The FFIT programme has been developed to include the latest scientific approaches to weight loss, physical activity and diet. These are delivered to groups of Scottish male football fans by community coaches at their favourite professional football club.

FFIT has been fully evaluated in a major research project, which has been led by the University of Glasgow. The Research project included the first ever randomised controlled trial of a health intervention delivered through professional sports clubs, funded by the National institute for Health Research Public Health Research programme. Details of such can be found in The Lancet, Volume 383, Issue 9924, Pages 1211-1221, 5 April 2014.

Typically FFIT programmes target men aged 35-65 and a BMI of over 28 kg/m2.
