Aberdeen begins fitness programme Red Start for schoolchildren

Aberdeen FC Community Trust is excited about a new programme for school children throughout the North East of Scotland.

The Red Start programme aims to combine football, fitness and fun for children of primary school age. The exciting new initiative is designed to engage 20 schools across the North East of Scotland in healthy activities. The programme aims to provide a whole school approach where all pupils from each of the selected schools benefit from taking part in a variety of activity sessions, appropriate for each age and ability over a 6-week period.

Red Start has been introduced not only to encourage children to engage in physical activity but to signpost them to opportunities within their local area and get them involved in sport. Aaron Scully, Community Coach brought into the AFCCT team to deliver the Red Start programme said “We feel this is an exciting new programme where thousands of children will benefit from taking part in fun physical activity sessions through Football. Every Class from each of the 20 schools will be involved and we hope we can raise awareness of local opportunities so pupils can continue to take part in sport and football beyond the 6-week programme.”

As part of the 4-year long programme it is hoped that AFCCT will also be able to create some future supporters of the club, with all schools having the opportunity to nominate selected pupils to attend a tour of the stadium before attending a match to see the first team play at Pittodrie. Each school will choose which pupils visit Pittodrie Stadium, whether it is through a competition, by choosing children who have really engaged with the programme or those who have shown improvement throughout the initiative.

Scott Duncan, Scottish FA Community Coach said “Red Start is a great addition to our school visit programme. We feel providing the opportunity for pupils to attend a stadium tour and first team match at no cost to the school is a unique and exciting format that local schools and children across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire will really benefit from.”
