Ferencvárosi Torna Club, known as Ferencváros (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈfɛrɛntsvaːroʃ] , is a Hungarian professional football club based in Ferencváros, Budapest, Hungary, that plays in the Hungarian League. Ferencváros was founded in 1899 by Ferenc Springer and a group of local residents of Budapest’s ninth district, Ferencváros. The club recently rejoined to the regulars of the UEFA Club Competions by participating in the group stages 5 years in a row, however, Ferencváros is best known internationally for winning the 1964–65 season of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (after defeating Juventus FC in Turin 1–0) and for reaching the final of the 1974–75 season of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.
The best-known part of the club is the well-supported men’s football team – the most popular team in the country. The parent multisport club Ferencvárosi TC divisions include not just women’s football, but also women’s and men’s handball, men’s ice hockey, men’s and women’ water polo with many successes and great achievements in the European competitions as well in the past decade. Wrestling, gymnastics and swimming teams is are also world-class level, not to mention athletics, curling and cycling divisions which are also highly successful.
The club colours are green and white, and the club mascot is a green eagle; hence another of the club’s nicknames, “The Green Eagles”.
The club’s recent excellence has been matched by its off-the-field progress: since 2011 it has been shaping football-loving communities against all forms of exclusion, has its own fair play awards gala and—partly as a result of EFDN membership—has implemented several CSR programmes on health promotion, crime prevention, social inclusion and sport for older people. The club hosted EFDN Conference in November 2022 in Groupama Arena.
