Istanbul Başakşehir ‘Recycles for Football!’

Istanbul Başakşehir, which has been carrying out campaigns raising public awareness on sustainability for years, proposes important activities in the fields of health, education and environment in line with the Global Goals.

The football fans at the Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium came to say “#Recycle for Football!” together before the big match against Fenerbahçe on the evening of 19 April. Istanbul Başakşehir, which has received acclaim for its efforts in this field, has been making great efforts to raise awareness about global climate change by carrying messages about the environment on its alternative jerseys, especially in the last 3 years.

Medipol Başakşehir, which has the LEED Gold-certified environmentally friendly stadium in Turkey, has added a new one to its innovations in the field of sustainability. With the voluntary cooperation and efforts of the graduates of the Professional Football Management Certificate Programme, Medipol Başakşehir prepared the “#Recycle for Football” guide to inform football fans about the plastic and plastic-containing materials consumed in stadiums on match days and outside of match days and their responsible consumption.

On the evening of 19 April, all fans coming to the stadium, including the away tribune for the Medipol Başakşehir – Fenerbahçe match, were able to download the guide prepared for them by scanning the QR code on the back of the environmentally friendly Mythos Player Cards that were given to them at the stadium entrance. After viewing the guide, football fans were able to recycle their plastic waste more easily by seeing a total of 32 recycling points, including the guest team tribune. Throughout the stadium, a total of 40 recycling points were created, including the changing rooms and press areas. Football fans were also able to win one of the surprise gifts when they spun the wheel by going to the link in the guide.

The guide prepared by Istanbul Başakşehir FK to inform football fans about recycling and its importance includes a lot of educational information ranging from the relationship between football and sustainability to the circular economy, from the use of plastic in football to why we should recycle and the environmentally friendly features of Başakşehir FT Stadium, as well as a recycling map of the stadium.
