Nine Club Brugge fans successfully quit smoking

At the beginning of January, 9 brave Club fans decided to take the step towards a smoke-free life. Thanks to the professional help of Jana, a recognised tobaccologist, and the financial support of Club Brugge Foundation, these 9 winners were able to fight against the cigarette and contribute to a smoke-free stadium.

Recognised smoking cessation sessions

In early January, Club Brugge Foundation made an appeal to anyone who felt encouraged to quit smoking. The members of the Belgian able to offer a small group of people the opportunity to join the on this journey to a smoke-free life.

We started with an information session after which each individual could decide whether or not they wanted to start this path. The tobaccologist Jana proved very convincing, as everyone at the info session eventually signed up. Even then a foundation for the close-knit group they have now become.

The sauce of Club Brugge

The participants went through eight sessions during which the tobaccologist helped them get rid of their addiction to cigarettes step by step. All sessions took place at the Jan Breydel Stadium, alternating between the A-core dressing room, Academy house, the Presidents’ club and the Friends & Family Bar. Places, where fans would not otherwise go, were the setting for the nine participants during this challenging journey.

Not only by offering unique venues for the sessions but also in numerous other ways, the club tried to give the participants extra motivation. For instance, they were given the unique opportunity to serve as flag wavers during the Champions League match Club-Benfica. And when a club match followed a smoke-stop session, all the participants watched together with a delicious fresh pizza to go with it. As icing on the cake, each participant received a personalised message from Bjorn Meijer to give them that extra push after the final session to ‘Bluvn Goan’ and not give up.

100% Successful

Yesterday, Thursday 30 March 2023, the last session went on within the Club Brugge Foundation track. The atmosphere within the group is resigned, as each of them has already quit smoking for 2 months.

“I can take the stairs again, hardly need my puffer anymore and have much more energy,”

Cindy, a member of the group

“I only buy cigarettes to sell in my café,”

Yves, a café owner

Many participants also talk about how they also unconsciously influence their immediate environment. For instance, numerous colleagues, friends or family members have already stopped smoking thanks to the support and tips of our smoke quitters. Now the participants will continue their journey individually, but in any case with the support of each other and Club Brugge Foundation!
