VfL Wolfsburg encourages children to be active through exercise programme

VfL Wolfsburg now moves around 800 children a week as part of the VfL exercise programme for primary schools, which was launched in August 2022.

Sport and exercise should always be part of everyday school life and preferably not only in physical education classes. The ‘Green-Whites’ exercise programme is initiated by VfL Wolfsburg and the core element of the programme is the weekly ball sports clubs for boys and girls in primary schools in the region. The number of participating primary schools has increased continuously since the start of the project. For the second half of the school year, another ten schools could be won for the project.

In the meantime, VfL and its 20-strong team of coaches are moving up to 800 children in 31 partner schools every week in 56 ball sports clubs. In addition to 16 Wolfsburg primary schools, eight primary schools from the Gifhorn district, two from Helmstedt, three from Braunschweig and two from Uelzen have joined the project. The Green-Whites have now provided around 35,840 additional hours of physical activity in the Wolfsburg region.

Sport, games and exercise at festivals

The spring also sees the start of the movement festival season for the partner schools. The movement festivals are the second important component of the school project. With a unique event format, VfL creates an additional sports day for each partner school, where the entire student body of a partner school can try out different ball sports. In cooperation with local partner clubs, the Bundesliga football team creates an individual, colourful programme of activities for each school.

The first festival of this kind took place before the Easter holidays at the Käferschule and was very well received by both the pupils and the teachers of the institution, so that a next edition of the event has already been requested for the coming school year. The next festival is already planned for May with the Wahrenholz primary school, where the local sports club will also be involved with its tennis and athletics section. The goal is to encourage up to 4,200 children per school year to participate in active sports in addition to the 800 children in the sports clubs.
