Adapted winter sports at FC Twente

On Friday 4 February, the Winter Olympics in Beijing officially started. Reason enough for FC Twente‘s project “Passend Sporten” (Adapted Sports) to pay some attention to this during the project.

Wednesday 2 February the participants of Passend Sporten in Hengelo have participated in their own Winter Olympics. Various sports they practised during this activity, albeit in a playful manner in the sports hall, included tobogganing, curling, snowboarding and throwing snowballs.

The lesson was received with great pleasure and the children are looking forward to the next lessons.

About the Project

Sport should be accessible and fun for everyone. Yet there are still too many children who, due to certain behavioural disturbances, have trouble connecting with their teammates or are even unable to play sports at all. FC Twente, Scoring for the community, offers a solution for this target group with the project Passend Sporten .

The target group consists of children between 6 and 13 years of age and is mainly found in special schools and in families that experience difficulties. With Passend Sporten, the children are offered a tailor-made programme for twelve weeks. During the first six weeks, the participants are introduced to various sports and games in a gym. The mental resilience of the children is also examined.

In the second part of the project, the children are introduced to various sports associations, such as football, volleyball and hockey clubs, but also to equestrian clubs and the ice skating club. Besides the children, their parents are also involved in the project. At the sports clubs, the children are given a supervisor who takes them in tow. Because sports clubs often lack knowledge on how to deal with this target group, tailor-made workshops are provided for the clubs and supervisors.

The ultimate goal is to let the children play sports in an environment where they feel safe and can be themselves. So that these children can also build up a social club life. On the one hand, this is possible with a sports club if the preconditions are sufficiently present and, on the other hand, by remaining active with the group of participating children who have started out.
