DIIY – FC St. Pauli produce sustainable jerseys

From next season on, FC St. Pauli will play in jerseys of the club’s own production and thus take another important step towards more sustainability in professional sport. FC St. Pauli has been working on the project since 2018 but was also looking for an alternative supplier that produces performance clothing sustainably and transparently and trades fairly. Because no external supplier could fully meet the criteria of FC St. Pauli, the club will take over the production itself in the future. Following the motto “You have to do everything yourself”, FC St. Pauli’s claim is to produce the most sustainable team sport collection in the world with the “DI!Y” brand. The club is responding to the specific wish of its members to continue to pursue the issue of sustainability consistently. The new collection will be available from May 2021, but the home jersey can be pre-ordered from December 1, 2020. During the first four weeks of the pre-order phase only, all buyers will have the unique opportunity to individualize the jersey and have their own name printed on it instead of the main sponsor’s congstar logo.

Oke Göttlich, President: “Even and especially in the Corona crisis, we want to meet the challenges with courage and entrepreneurial spirit together with all St. Pauli fans. This independence and the search for new ways has always been a characteristic of FC St. Pauli. With our own team sports collection, we are therefore continuing to consistently pursue our path of independence. The strength of a member-operated club is shown in the implementation of the ideas of our members. Together we can counter any crisis. DI!Y is derived from the term DIY ‘Do it yourself’. This is exactly what FC St. Pauli is all about: not always just complaining, but doing it better yourself.”

Bernd von Geldern, Sales Director: “At the 2016 General Meeting, we were given the task of producing our merchandising in a fair and sustainable manner. We want to meet this demand in as many areas as possible. With our own brand ‘DI!Y’ we want to show that quality, sustainability and fair working conditions do not have to be mutually exclusive, even for performance clothing. That’s why we have deliberately raised the bar with our self-imposed standards for the new Teamsport collection. We are convinced that our fans also share these standards and want to take them with us on our journey. That’s why we’re already starting advance sales for the 2021/22 season home jersey – because only together with our fans can we achieve our ambitious goal of producing the most sustainable team sport collection in the world.”

FC St. Pauli is not only actively working on sustainability challenges, but also tackles social issues. In the beginning of November, the club called for donations for the accommodation and care of homeless people in hotels, in order to help at least some people through the winter warm and safe. Up until November 25th, they have already received donations of 30,000 Euros and counting. People who want to donate can find more information here to make the donation barometer rise a little bit more since every euro counts.
