Football Works Tournament in Lelystad!

Football brings people and organisations together and has a social power that can inspire people to take positive steps in their own development. The football clubs can play an important role in this by offering social internships and work guidance programmes. It also offers vulnerable people a social safety net and makes them feel part of the society again. ‘Werk via Sport DJI’ and EFDN acknowledge that football can be very important for detainees to successfully return to society after their detention, thereby reducing nuisance, crime and insecurity.

The sixth edition of the festival took place on the 13th of October in Lelystad, the Netherlands. The tournament was organised in collaboration with Department of Corrections. It was a rainy day, but that did not affect the enthusiasm of the participating teams. 10 teams participated, including seven from the Netherlands, two from Germany and one from Belgium.

The participating teams were:

  • FC the Rebels
  • Street Kings
  • PI Krimpen
  • PI Lelystad
  • PI Dordrecht
  • PI Sittard
  • PI Veenhuizen
  • JVA Lingen
  • Bayer 04 Leverkusen
  • Younited Antwerp

The teams were divided into 2 groupsof 5. One groups played field football on the outdoor pitch in the morning and live table football in the sports hall in the afternoon, and in the other group it was the other way round. The best two teams from each pool qualified for the knock-out phase.

In group A, this was an exciting battle between PI Dordrecht, PI Lelystad and Street Kings who all finished on 9 points. In the end, PI Dordrecht and PI Lelystad advanced to the semi-finals on goal difference.

In group B, PI Krimpen and former pros FC de Rebellen advanced to the next round.

In the knock-out phase, PI Dordrecht and FC de Rebellen qualified for the final, where FC de Rebellen ran away with the first prize. PI Krimpen beat PI Lelystad in the battle for bronze.

The referees judged the teams on their fair play behaviour throughout the day. The eventual winner of the fair play ranking was Street Kings of street footballer Edward van Gils.
