Nutrition Workshop for Leverkusen Primary School Pupils

For 27 schoolchildren of the Astrid Lindgren Community School in Leverkusen, a workshop on the topic of “Nutrition” was on the agenda on Tuesday, 4 April. After expert Tamara Wittenburg had guided the first to fourth graders through the morning in a playful way, the group was then allowed to take a look at the catacombs of the BayArena – the home of Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Nutrition is an ‘important topic’ – also for children

Together with ecotrophologist Tamara Wittenburg, an expert in nutrition and home economics, Benjamin Seifert (Bayer 04 football school and social affairs staff) and Jörg Kappenhagen (head of social affairs at Bayer 04) organised the almost two-hour workshop for the 27 children and teaching staff from the school in Leverkusen. Under the motto “I love my body and want to do something good for it”, the young and old guests were taught everything important about nutrition and health.

Wittenburg introduced the children to central aspects of nutrition in a playful way. It is particularly important to the ecotrophologist that children become aware of the importance of the topic of nutrition at an early age.

“There are many nutrition myths nowadays. I want to teach children how to make good choices and how to assess what their body needs and how to give what they need to their body. Nutrition and health are key issues, especially for children. That’s why it’s a matter close to my heart to address the tips and advice to the children themselves already and not just to the parents.”

Insight into the BayArena

At the end of the workshop, the children were, of course, allowed to explore the area around the Lions’ Club Room at the BayArena. But it wasn’t just the trophies in the entrance area of the West Wing of the BayArena that left a special impression on the children. For a few minutes, the little guests were allowed to feel like professionals and take a look into the catacombs of the stadium. And the next surprise was not long in coming: on the way to the visitors’ dressing room, where the group was allowed to have a look inside, the children met almost the entire squad. The professionals were unable to stop on the way to the training ground, but a quick “Hello!” in the direction of the kids was a matter of course for each of the Leverkusen professionals.

At the end of the day, the guests of the Astrid Lindgren Community School came together for lunch. Alexander Wagner, chef of the professional team, also joined them and was available to answer one or two questions. As a souvenir of the morning at the BayArena, each of the young guests received a Bayer 04 sports bag.
