EFDN Members raise awareness for breast cancer

October is world Breast Cancer Awareness month and many different EFDN member clubs have been raising awareness through different campaigns in their communities. Here are three examples of what has been done.

SD Huesca

4,000 people painted the streets of Huesca with pink and hope in a new edition of the “Huesca against cancer” race. Organised by the Alcoraz Foundation, the 8th edition was a great success thanks to the thousands of people from Huesca who once again showed their support for the cause of the Spanish Cancer Association.

The Plaza de Navarra was the epicentre of the solidarity march, which once again demonstrated the dedication of the people of Huesca. This was the starting and finishing point, with a route through the city centre, adapted to all ages, with the aim of giving visibility to the fight against cancer and for the messages of support, prevention and research to reach more people.

With mostly a family audience, Carlos Sanmartín was the first to cross the finish line in the men’s category, followed by Alberto García and Alejandro Olivares. In the women’s category, Isabel Laguarta, followed by Laura Gañán and Lourdes Montanga.

Along with the 4,000 participants, there were numerous contributions through the ‘Dorsal 0’, as well as the support of more than 50 volunteers. The Alcoraz Foundation would like to thank all of them, as well as the Huesca City Council, and Toñín Speaker and Sonido 54, who were in charge of animating the event throughout the morning. The same goes to the sponsors, who made it possible to distribute refreshments at the end of the route and turn the finish line into a party. A perfect end to an event that has become a must on the calendar of the people of Huesca.

OFI Crete FC

Under the motto “We are all on the same team”, OFI FC for the fourth consecutive year organizes a series of actions aimed at prevention and information about the fight against breast cancer.

On Monday, October 24, 2022, at the home game against Lamia, they invited all women and children up to 12 years old to the stadium, with a symbolic ticket price of 2 euros at Gate 1, offering all proceeds from ticket sales to the Panhellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer “Alma Zois”.

The diagnostic center “ASKLIPIOS – DIAGNOSIS”, sponsor of the team, will provide information about breast cancer at the entrance of Gate 1 to all women who come to the stadium for the match against Lamia, and after a draw, fifteen (15) lucky women will win a free mammogram.

They also will organize a workshop for the second consecutive year, on the topic of information and prevention to fight the disease.

Speakers will be the Specialist Breast Radiologist, Mrs. Stavrianthi Vasilaki – Askoxylaki, the surgeon oncologist specializing in breast, Mr. Yannis Askoxylakis and the actress, Mrs. Hara Zaronaki, who will talk about her personal battle with breast cancer.

Panathinaikos FC

Panathinaikos FC in cooperation with the “Panhellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer “Alma Zois””, actively participates in the action for breast cancer prevention. In this context, the players of the Trifilio and Aris football teams wore pink t-shirts with the message: Today we all wear ROZ, when entering the pitch before the start of the match between them.

The aim is to raise awareness and inform the public about the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer. This is an issue that concerns us all. It is not only about women, who are mostly at risk of contracting the disease, but also about men. It is a matter for all of us because it concerns the mother, the sister, the wife, the partner, the friend.
