Real Betis Balompié Offsets its Entire Carbon Footprint to Become a Carbon Neutral Club.

Real Betis Balompié has compensated its GHG emissions generated during the 2020/2021 season after managing to measure and register, for the third consecutive year, its corporate carbon footprint in the Registry of carbon footprint, compensation and CO2 absorption projects of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

The green and white club, already in the process of calculating its fourth year of study 2021/2022, becomes the first football club in LaLiga to calculate, reduce and register its Carbon Footprint for the third consecutive year. The club has gone one step further and has become a carbon-neutral team by offsetting all of its emissions through the purchase of credits from the United Nations.

The project selected to offset its carbon footprint generated during the 2020/2021 season is located in the town of Unión Hidalgo, Mexico. It is a renewable electricity generation project through the construction and operation of a 90 MW wind farm called Piedra Larga Wind Farm.

The benefits of this project include the minimisation of impacts on resources and the environment, as well as the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by substituting electricity generated from fossil fuels with renewable energy, which is a free, abundant and inexhaustible resource. It also generates a positive social and local economic impact through job creation and training, along with industry growth and technological developments.

Since the 2018/2019 season, the first in which Real Betis Balompié measured its environmental impact, it has managed to reduce its carbon footprint by 35.56%. As a result, betting on the continuity of this line of decarbonisation and application of good environmental practices, that is being recognised by different organisations around the world.

In this way, Real Betis Balompié, through its Forever Green Sustainability Programme – continues to advance in its strategy to be the most sustainable football club on the planet, through its various environmental initiatives. To this end, the club has the support of its trusted sustainability consultancy, Ecoterrae, a company with which it has been actively working for several years in its fight against climate change, as well as has carried out the EINF (Non-Financial Information Statement) and the carbon footprint of the organisation, alongside the Forever Green matches initiative. Overall, accompanying and advising the green and white club throughout its journey towards sustainability.
