Newcastle United Foundation – Breaking the Cycle of Youth Violence

The ‘Breaking the Cycle of Youth Violence’ programme has been up and running since January 2018. Established by Newcastle United Foundation in partnership with Newcastle Youth Offending Team, and funded by the Premier League and BBC Children in Need, the project aims to work with young people known to the Newcastle Youth Offending Team who have committed offences linked to violence. The programme offers young people aged 10-17 the opportunity to undertake targeted 1:1 work which aims to combat their offending by creating bespoke programmes based on their identified needs. The programme also allows the young person to access positive activities which are of interest to them. The programme aims to reduce reoffending, engage young people back into education, employment or training, as well as focusing on positive behaviour change and making the right choices.

Newcastle United Foundation and Burnley FC in the Community’s Breaking the Cycle of Youth Violence programmes have come together to start the unique Pen Pals Project. The project will see participants of both programmes ‘buddy up’ and work together towards a social action project in their respective communities. The collaboration will involve regular contact between participants through writing, video communications and face-to-face meetings. The Pen Pals Project will be aimed at young people who will learn about other communities as well as their own and seeks to build positive peer relationships with the opportunity for participants to visit each other’s communities. It is hoped the project will reduce social isolation, and enable young people to access and experience a unique opportunity using the power of football.
